What You Should Know About the Herbst?
Dr. Ting has corrected many overbites using one of the most modern and effective appliance known as the Herbst. A Herbst appliance is usually used in conjunction with braces to help the lower jaw develop in a forward direction. Patients using the appliance see rapid results and feel the benefits of having straight teeth and a properly aligned jaw.
The appliance is well tolerated after an initial adjustment period of about one week, and has little to no effect on the speech. It is usually used in conjunction with the braces for a minimum period of 12 months although this may vary depending on your child unique needs.
Unlike a headgear, the Herbst is cemented to the molars, therefore it is working 24 hours a day. This allows the overbite to be corrected in the shortest period of time. The herbst also eliminates the need for tooth extractions and jaw surgery (frequently used for overbite correction). The greatest benefit of all is that it is not very visible. It may be visible when your child laughs or speaks, but it is far less obtrusive than headgear.
